For some data types, such as the numeric data types (expect type p) and the deep data types, there are platform-specific alignment requirements. In the memory, fields with such types must start at addresses that are divisible by 4 or 8. In a Unicode system, data objects of character-type data types are at memory addresses that are divisible by 2 or 4, depending on the Unicode character representation. In a structure or substructure, the component with the highest alignment requirement defines the alignment of the entire structure. This may result in alignment gaps before or after components with alignment requirements.
