Ads that are placed by private individuals, car dealerships, estate agents or funeral directors, and in contrast to product and image ads from major companies have a much simpler design, but are often published in specialist columns or special publications on specific days. Many classified ads are all-copy, whilst others also contain some design elements, such as lists, borders, crosses, photos, pictures or logos.

Classified ads are usually entered by employees at a media company or the customer. They are sold over the telephone, in sales offices and on the Internet.

Examples of classified ads include property ads, car ads, obituaries, birthday ads or various types of items to be sold or bought.
