Definicja combining character

A character whose visible form is intended to visually combine with or attach to another character.

Combining characters are not used in isolation (unless they are being described). They include such characters as accents, diacritics, Hebrew points, Arabic vowel signs and Indic matras.

The meaning of the resulting combination may be a combination of the meanings of its components, or it may be a new meaning altogether. For example, the character U+0041 LATIN CAPITAL LETTER A combines with U+030A COMBINING RING ABOVE to produce Ĺ.
