A substance that can pose a danger to humans, animals, or the environment when being handled or stored. The handling and storage of hazardous substances is governed by law.

According to laws in Germany, hazardous substances are substances, preparations, or products that have one or more of the following properties:

They are hazardous substances or hazardous preparations according to chemicals laws. They pose an explosion hazard. Hazardous or explosive substances or preparations can be formed or escape during their manufacture or use. They are known to transmit pathogens.

Hazardous substances are not the same as dangerous goods, which are better known in the United States as hazardous materials.
