The wear and tear of an equipment (for example, aircraft landing gear, machine part) does not always depend on the duration of its operation but rather on how often and at which intensity it is operated. For each operation of such an equipment the wear and tear is recorded in number of cycles. For example, for a landing gear, each take-off and landing of the aircraft would be recorded as one cycle.
