Character spacing in a font. This character spacing is defined by the actual characters, the width after the preceding character and the width before the subsequent character. This character spacing can vary greatly from font to font.

If you change the tracking, you change the horizontal spacing of characters and the space between the letters. This means that you are changing the width after the preceding character and the width before the subsequent character.

In conjunction with the line and word spacing, tracking determines the readability of a text. If characters are too close together, the text is hard to read. If they are too far apart, it looks as if the text contains gaps. In typographical terms, tracking is not therefore a fixed size, but is dependent on other typographical factors.

When classified ads are designed, tracking is usually considered in terms of sales promoting aspects and not typographical aspects. Changing the tracking should make it possible to fit more text into a line or cause less text to occupy more space.
