An exchange rate is a factor used to translate monetary values into a foreign currency.

With respect to a given date, exchange rates are generally distinguished between:

With respect to the origin of an exchange rate over time, exchange rates are differentiated as follows:

Current rate

The rate of exchange between two currencies that is valid as per the date of the financial statement.

Average rate

The rate of exchange that is calculated from the average of the exchange rates of different dates.

Historical rate

The rate of exchange that was valid as per the date of the purchase, production, or incurrence of an asset or a liability.

Monthly (average) rate

The rate of exchange for a specific month or accounting period.

This rate is generally an average of exchange rates.
