In standard counter reading transfer, huge numbers of measurement documents are created. To reduce the database volume, you can use interval documents.

Interval documents summarize the transferred counter readings for a time interval. In other words, the system uses the same measurement document to transfer counter readings for an object for as long as a piece of equipment is installed at the same functional location or in the same superior piece of equipment.

This means that there is usually only one measurement document for each installation interval of a piece of equipment: this is the interval document. On transfer, the system does not create separate documents for the subordinate technical objects.

Example

A commercial aircraft is described in the SAP system as a hierarchical structure of technical objects (functional locations and equipment). It contains around 2500 pieces of equipment, which are maintained individually by means of counter-based maintenance plans. The same two counters are assigned to each piece of equipment.

If you use counter reading transfer, the user only needs to enter the counter readings once per aircraft (per tail number). The system then calculates the difference from the last entry and automatically transfers this difference to all subordinate functional locations and pieces of equipment, according to the object structure.

Depending on how frequently a reading is entered, in this example you would have 5000 or more measurement documents per day. With a typical fleet size of 50 to 500 aircraft, so many documents would be created that a database could hardly cope, if it could cope at all. The vast number of documents comes from the fact that counter reading transfer creates a separate document for each counter on the subordinate levels whenever you enter a counter reading at the top level.

In this example, it would make sense to use interval documents.
